Fong Qi Wei
'I strive to make images which touches both the feeling part and the thinking part of your mind.My art seeks to get your attention (the feeling part) and hopefully engage you on a deeper level as you look at it for longer (the thinking part).' Fong Qi Wei focuses mostly on landscapes and the environment, and, in his projects 'time is a dimension' and 'time in motion', aims to show the contrasts between the different times of the day. Although he does not touch 'evidence', my chosen topic, I am interested in this photographer for his techniques. I love the way he chooses to present his photographs - the strips of different photographs pieced together to show different things. He does this by placing a camera on a tripod and takes a photo of the same spot with time intervals in between each photo. He then edits these photos and combines them in a way that produces an often colourful and interesting product.
The photo above shows a building at various times of the day, showing the pale sky during the process of a sunset. I really like how he has lined up the strips of light to match the lines shape of the building. This enables the colour of the sky match up with the reflection on the building. I think the soft pinks, purples, blues and oranges go very well together and it makes the photo have a calming feel to it.
Fong Qi Wei creates this effect by layering different photos on top of one another - he keeps a camera on a tripod for an extended amount of time, and takes photos at different times of the day, usually with steady intervals (for example, 1 hour between taking photos). Once he has taken his ideal amount of photos, he edits them together. In the 'Glassy Sunset' GIF, you can see the movement of the clouds, which I think is very intriguing to watch as you can see the different times of the day even more clearly. I am interested in this idea and I am drawn to try and use this technique in this project, however I will need to first learn how to construct images like these and practice - If I am unable to do this, I will look into other photographers to find different techniques for inspiration.
